Wind Sock

Back when
we were at Island Home Airport
in 2001
we had
difficulty seeing the airport wind sock from our take off and landing
area so we ended up having to buy one ourselves.
The Saturn
folks were kind enough to loan us this one
on UT game
weekends for a short time but alas they had greater ambitions for it
and took it away.
We
couldn't afford one as big as the Saturn blimp and neither they or
the folks at Good Year wanted to give us theirs so we had to shell
out some bucks for something a little smaller lol. We could
have saved a few bucks by throwing grass into the air but that's kind
of hard to do on approach so to make it easier we had to shell out
some bucks and buy this nifty orange and white wind sock.

We put it
up in a makeshift
fashion about 8 feet off the ground and got a lesson
on how
different the wind acts in different surroundings. When the
airport sock on the field pointed in one direction our sock would be
indicating that the wind was coming from a completely different
direction. We were somewhere around 1000 south of the runway
and surrounded on three side by a hanger to our west and trees to the
south and east which made the wind act totally different.
This is our
Wind Sock flying above one of the hangers at our latest location
Seymour airpark.

When we got
back from Sun 'N Fun in April 2005 our sock was trashed lol.
I guess the
winds must have gotten pretty bad while we were gone because it was
all but gone lol.
These thing evidently these things don't have a very long life because ours only lasted about through about 18 months of service. We bought it in June of 2001 but it was only out in the weather for a little over a year and it bit the dust. The color fades out pretty fast too so it will be about a once a year purchase from our experience with it so far.
