More words!!! grumble grumble but the outcome is Kewl!!
Watch a WWF show or two before you work on these because your going to have to learn some new holds to whoop theses into shape lol.
Some
guys don't use these to save weight I'm told but I think its because
they whooped their butts into submission lol.
In
reading this and that in my travels I've read that an uncovered tube
such as this
puts
some where around seven times the drag on the ship then having a
wedge shape does
,so
weight or no weight from what I gathered from the information
they're needed unless all you do is hover.

Getting
the wheel pin holes and the step slots cut into the pants
at
just the right places is a real deal to with out having to reglass
your mess up again.

You'll notice we have alot more screws holding them together then it calls for in the Rotorway specs.
If we used any less the two panels would have had bad fits between them.
Your also supposed to have 1 1/2 threads coming out of the nuts to pass FAA building certification. If you do this you'll have trouble cleaning them plus you'll obtain some scars in your legs from getting caught on them from time to time. We obtained screws that just barely came out of the nuts here and for where the skid tubes attach to the landing gear.
Once we explained why we did this to our FAA inspector she allowed us to leave it that way.

There are two ways to mount these things.
1 is
the method you see here with hose clamps
2 is
assemble them in place and then use that caned foam stuff
to fill them
with and it holds them in place.
I'm not sure but if you ever had to remove them after using
this method it would seem that they would have to be destroyed to do it.
The other side of the coin is that that foam stuff is highly
corrosive and would promote rust.
