Rotor Tach
Date: 1/1/01
From: (Ron Spiker)
The last
couple times I attempted to go flying, my rotor tach would not come
up into the
green. The engine was at 100% and the phototach showed 520 RPM,
but the
rotor tach was not reading right any longer. I spent a while trying
to adjust
the gauge but to no avail. I contacted Westach/Westberg with the
problem and
they asked "How cold is the ambient air? We have made a mod for
problems
with cold temps." I let them know its been between 0 - 20 F the
last month
or so here in Pennsylvania. Their reply was "...I would suggest
sending it
to us for the temp comp upgrade. There isn't any charge for
this."
I don't know if this applies to newer gauges, mine was purchased in
1996. It
was quite a pleasant surprise that
(1) it was
the gauge and not the
belts
slipping or other problem
(2) they
had an upgrade to fix the cold
weather
problem with the gauge, and
(3) there
isn't any charge for the
upgrade.

Yes we all
have the cold weather rotor tach
problem. I
sent mine back 2 years ago and it's
better but
not 100% correct. Maybe they have a
better fix now.
